Potty training your puppy should start as soon as you bring puppy home. Potty training may have some problems, but, like everything else, if you have patience, things will work out well.

Marking the territory is a problem with male dogs more so than with a  female dog. This is unfortunate for the owner, but it can be stopped by  spaying and neutering the dog as soon as possible.

If your dog does have an accident in the house, you will have to remove the  urine and eliminate the smell or the dog will continue to go back to that  spot. Consider trying a product that has active enzymes rather than  something that will only mask the smell for a short time.

Keep the dog on a regular feeding and drinking schedule to prevent any  accidents in the home. If your dog is not house trained, you would not want  to leave food out all day long. The dog should be on a timed feeding  routine until he or she is properly potty trained.

This can be a breakfast, lunch and dinner feeding. Then you will have control over when the dog will need to relieve him or herself. The same will go for water. Do not give large amounts of water if you are going to be away at work.

Potty training your puppy in the crate can pose some problems for young dogs that do not have a large enough bladder. You can figure that a dog that is two months old can hold their urine for two hours and a three-month-old dog can hold it for three hours and so on.

If you are leaving the puppy in the crate for eight hours, use a puppy potty pad because they are going to have an accident. This of course is different with every dog and dog breed.

Even the best-trained dog can have an accident if you leave him or her along for long periods of time. If the dog is on a regular schedule and you miss that potty time, they may have an accident. If you are going to be out for a long time, you may want to provide a puppy potty pad for the dog.

Dogs can also get bored when left alone all the time and may strike out at you by urinating in the house. This unfortunately is a behaviour problem you have to deal with by training the dog to do something else while you are gone.

Provide dog toys and keep the TV on while you are gone and the dog will always feel as if someone is there. Many people laugh when you tell them the dog needs to have a TV on, but the truth is that the dog will feel more comfortable. You may also want to leave a light on if you will be away at night. The more you make the dog feel at ease, the more they will want to please you and not urinate in the house while you are home or out. It is in their nature to please their owners, but they can also show you they are upset by breaking the rules.

Crate training your puppy, like everything else, should start as quickly as possible.

Feed him his meals in the crate and that will alow you to lock the door for short periods of time. Because he’s eating, the puppy will be distracted, and in his eyes, he’s even being rewarded for being in the crate.

Start Off Gradually

Good crate training has be to done gradually. Start by feeding him at the door opening, then push the food further back into the crate. Continue to push the bowl of food further and further back until the puppy is comfortable going all the way into the crate to eat. Make it easier for him by placing treats inside, and line the bottom of the crate with a soft blanket.

Leave puppy in the crate for about 10 minutes to begin with, and gradually increase this to regular one-to-two-hour intervals. then try leaving him alone for about 4 hours, and each time he does well, give him lots of praise. You should close the door for longer periods of time as the crate training advances, until you can go to work knowing that he is comfortable. Leave snacks and toys in the crate so he wont become bored, and he’ll be quite happy.

You also have to be realistic about how long the puppy can stay in the crate without having an accident, so as well as crtae training, you might consider potty training. Leave the crate door open when you are home so your dog can use it as a true den.

Don’t Spoil Him

Avoid making emotional displays upon leaving and returning. If you are calm your dog will be calm and if you are excited your dog will become excited. Avoid giving your dog table scraps as there are foods that can be dangerous to dogs. In addition, feeding your dog from the table can create behaviour problems.

All puppies are cute and easy to love. But, close observation will help you to see his or her personality traits and characteristics. Puppies love to roam around, investigate things and chew everything in sight! As puppy gets older, he’ll also find ways to get into the garbage.

Puppies die from chewing on electrical cords, suffocate in plastic bags, drown in pools or ponds, get caught up in curtain cords and strangle to death. Keeping your puppy safe from harm is one of your responsibilities as a pet owner, and good crate training can help.
